Two top female golf stars to play in Super Match

Hyundai Card will host a charity golf match between world’s No. 1 Ko Jin-young and No. 3 Park Sung-hyun without fans in Korea on May 24.

The high-profile tournament involving the world-renowned female Korean golf players comes as the Korea Ladies Professional Golf Association (KLPGA) resumed on May 14 also in the absence of spectators its suspended season due the outbreak of COVID-19 earlier this year.

In the one-time skins match, to be televised live on SBS Golf cable TV station, the winner will donate 100 million won ($81,615) to the charity organization each player has chosen. An extra 10 million won prize will be paid out each time a player wins in the two holes Ko and Park respectively picked prior to the tournament.

In light of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, Hyundai Card will take every possible prevention measures. The match will take place without a gallery due to the Covid-19 outbreak. Workforce allowed at the scene will be minimized and everyone entering the golf course will be required to wear masks and have their temperature checked. The entire facility will be sanitized constantly. The two players will also maintain physical distance throughout the game.

Having scored four LPGA victories including two major, Ko Jin-young won the LPGA’s Rolex Player of the Year in 2019, her sophomore LPGA Tour season. She is renowned for fundamentally solid swing.

In her rookie year of 2017 with the LPGA Tour, Park Sung-hyun was off to a phenomenal start, being named the Rookie of the Year and Tour’s Player of the Year award. She was No. 3 LPGA’s Rolex Player of the Year in 2019.

“We would like to cheer up everyone with hope that they would overcome Covid-19 and go back to normal as soon as possible,” said the two players in a joint statement.

The upcoming event is a special edition for Hyundai Card’s sports match series under the brand name “Super Match” that dates back to 2005 when the company invited women’s tennis stars Maria Sharapova and Venus Williams over. Ever since, the Super Match series has featured sports stars in tennis, figure skating, snowboard and dance sport, with the last event being held in 2011.

Hyundai Card has run Super series for not only sport events but also live music concerts, performances and other cultural events to inspire customers and enhance their experience as a lifestyle brand.

The Ko versus Park match is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Sky 72 Golf & Resort in Incheon.
